Storm Drain Plan Looks Promising

.
EDITORIAL: Prospects look promising for work on South Valley flood prevention storm drains to begin as soon as a year from now. The good news comes from the office of Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., who succeeded in including $19.5 million in funding for drains and flood control measures in a bill introduced in Congress by the chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee.
If approved by Congress, work would commence as early as next year on flood control measures in areas that have suffered from flooding for decades. The Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority, working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bernalillo County and cooperation from Isleta Pueblo, would carry out the work.
The first phase would help protect about 500 residents north of Rio Bravo.
Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., has said he will make getting congressional support for the project a top priority. Let's hope the two senators succeed in getting this much-needed funding approved.
