Airport Project Triumph for City
.
EDITORIAL: Completion of water and sewer services for the Double Eagle II Airport is a milestone event for the West Side.
Mayor Martin Chávez called commencement of the service the city's "economic future" and in terms of economic development, it is key.
The new water and sewer lines, paired with a 4-inch fiber optic cable, will serve the West Side airport and pave the way for development of a 450-acre aviation industrial park that is expected to bring in thousands of jobs. Eclipse Aviation, now developing a low-cost business jet at the Albuquerque International Sunport, is expected to bring 2,000 jobs to the park by 2009. Other businesses, including its suppliers, could bring another 1,000.
The city and the federal government worked together to bring this $9.6 million project to fruition. Its completion is a watershed event in terms of good economic planning and a relief to those who have put up with its construction dust for the past year.
